Mindfulness: It’s pretty mellow & easy to start

In recent years, mindfulness has become a popular way to reduce stress and improve overall health. It involves focusing on the present moment and being aware of what is going on without any judgment or distractions.

One simple way to practice mindfulness is through conscious breathing. By taking a few moments to focus on your breath, you can calm your mind and bring yourself into the present moment.

A quick mindful exercise

Here’s a simple and very well-known breathing activity to try next time the stress gets you going:

1. Find a quiet, peaceful place.

2. To ensure the utmost comfort when sitting, maintain an upright posture with your feet placed

flat on the floor.

3. Close your eyes or focus your gaze on a single point in front of you.

4. Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely.

5. Hold the breath for a few seconds.

6. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth, letting all the air out.

7. Repeat this breathing pattern for several deep rounds, allowing your mind to focus on the sensation of your breath moving in and out of your body. Whenever your thoughts start to drift away, gently remind yourself to focus on your breath.

8. As you continue to breathe, you may notice your body relaxing and your mind becoming calmer. Pay attention to any physical sensations you experience, such as the feeling of your chest rising and falling with each breath or the slow ebb and flow of breath in your belly.

9. Take a few moments to simply be present with your breath, without any judgment or expectation.

10. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes or shift your gaze back to your surroundings. Take a moment to notice how you feel after the breathing exercise. Do you feel more relaxed or centered?

This simple breathing activity can be done anytime, anywhere, and can help bring you into a state of mindfulness in just a few minutes. Practicing mindfulness regularly can lead to a range of benefits, including reduced anxiety and depression, improved concentration and memory, and increased feelings of well-being.

Mellow with mindfulness often

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine can be as simple as taking a few moments each day to focus on your breath, or it can involve more structured practices such as meditation or yoga. Might even be as simple as a quick jive with your Spotify.

With time and practice, you’ll find that mindfulness can become a natural part of your daily life, helping you to stay grounded and focused even in the midst of life’s bummers.
